The Vosika Brothers’ Journey

The Beginning

1987 - In Colorado near the beginning of his 4 years of military service while working as a helicopter mechanic, Tim bought his first guitar and gained a passion for playing it. His main intent, though, was to write his own songs. A couple of years later he met and married Liesl, who began singing with Tim, but only in the privacy of their own home. Just after Tim and Liesl met, Tim had gone back home to Oregon, while on military leave, and visited his brother Lee who had just gotten out of the Army. This is when they discovered that they could sing together.

Lee already knew he liked to sing. Entertaining his fellow soldiers in the Army while being transported on busses, his Sergeant Major and many others would follow his lead and sing along to fifties songs. In the U.S Army, Lee served as a Cavalry Scout and drove tracked vehicles patrolling the East German border before the end of the Cold War.

1991 - Tim & Liesl moved to Oregon after Tim completed his military service. There in the Portland area, in 1992, after Tim had written a number of songs that didn’t work, Lee, Tim, and Liesl wrote their first song that worked called “Autumn Morning”. Within another year and more songs later, the trio began their hand at performing in public.

Performing

1992 - Tim, Lee, and Liesl started performing as a trio at an office Christmas party, Multnomah Falls, pubs, coffee shops, Portland Saturday Market, and community events. The trio even played one Christmas Eve’ on the Portland light rail. Then at the end of 1993, Tim and Liesl had their first child. Liesl chose to be a full-time mother, and the trio became a duo.

1994-2005 - In the Portland area, the brothers continued to play at different venues, adding more songs as they went. They enjoyed playing to smaller as well as larger audiences.

Recording

1992 - A lesser home recording of their 7 best songs was made and given to friends and family. It was reported that people were wearing out their cassette tape copies.

1998 - The brothers went into a professional studio. The budget allowed for 3 songs (tracks 5-7). This was the beginning of this CD. To save money for the rest of the album project, they purchased equipment so they could accomplish much of the tracks at home. Tim had already been learning about recording since 1989 when he bought his first 4-track recorder.

2005 - Tim, Liesl and their 4 kids, needed to move to Arizona, so this recording project was given priority to be finished.

Tim says, “It took us a few years to record this album because Lee and I both had to work. On weekends it was recuperate, family time, and go to church. It was often that we were too tired to record in the evenings. Our families came first. The gigs we did had to be worked into our overloaded, gotta-pay-the-bills-and-spend-time-with-the-kids schedules. We were also hikers and backpackers. Some things had to give. Finally, we finished our album.”

2006 - Tim returned from Arizona to the studio in Portland for a week to accomplish the final tracks of this CD.

This album reflects much about the thoughts and lives of the VOSIKA BROTHERS.
